Delta Governor Pledges to Review Oil Revenue Sharing as 13% Derivation Debate Heats Up

The Governor of Delta State has pledged to join other Niger Delta governors in pushing the Federal Government to increase the derivation principle from 13% to at least 25% of oil revenues, reigniting a long-standing debate about resource control.

Speaking at a stakeholders forum in Asaba, the Governor argued that the current formula does not adequately compensate states whose land and waters are exploited for petroleum extraction, leaving communities environmentally damaged and economically marginalized.

The push for derivation review has gained new momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political analysts suggesting that resource control could emerge as a dominant campaign issue for Niger Delta politicians across party lines.

Civil society groups in the region have welcomed the renewed advocacy but are calling for concrete legislative proposals rather than political rhetoric.
