Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has underscored the importance of security in sustaining democratic governance, declaring that democracy cannot flourish where citizens live in fear and insecurity.
Speaking during the Democracy Day celebrations in Abuja, the President said national security remains the bedrock upon which democratic institutions, economic prosperity, and social stability are built. He stressed that while Nigeria has made remarkable progress in its democratic journey, the country must continue to address security challenges to safeguard those achievements.
“Democracy without security is a mirage,” Tinubu stated, noting that the true dividends of democracy can only be enjoyed when citizens are free to live, work, and pursue their aspirations without threats to their lives and property.
The President acknowledged the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces, security agencies, and other stakeholders working tirelessly to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality across the country. He commended their dedication and pledged continued government support to strengthen security operations nationwide.
According to Tinubu, his administration remains committed to enhancing the operational capacity of security agencies through improved intelligence gathering, modern equipment, training, and inter-agency collaboration. He said these measures are aimed at restoring peace in troubled communities and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians.
The President further emphasized that security and development go hand in hand, explaining that no nation can attract meaningful investment or achieve sustainable economic growth in an atmosphere of instability. He noted that creating a secure environment is essential to unlocking opportunities for businesses, job creation, and national development.
Tinubu also called on citizens to play an active role in promoting peace and security by supporting law enforcement agencies with credible information and fostering unity within their communities. He urged religious leaders, traditional institutions, and civil society organizations to contribute to efforts aimed at building a safer and more cohesive society.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic evolution, the President praised the resilience of Nigerians and the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists who fought for the freedoms the nation enjoys today. He maintained that preserving democracy requires a collective commitment to protecting lives, upholding the rule of law, and defending the nation’s institutions.As the nation commemorates another Democracy Day, the President expressed optimism that with unity, determination, and sustained efforts, Nigeria will overcome its security challenges and continue on the path of democratic consolidation and national progress.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to remain hopeful and patriotic, assuring them that his administration remains focused on building a secure, peaceful, and prosperous nation for present and future generations.
