Escaped cybercrime suspect dies after gun battle with EFCC operatives

A suspected cybercrime fugitive who escaped from custody has died following a gun battle with operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Benue State.

The deceased, identified as Atser Sesugh, was among three suspects previously arrested by the EFCC over alleged fraud and cybercrime-related offences in Makurdi. According to reports, the suspects escaped from the commission’s custody in early May, prompting a manhunt by security agencies.

Security sources disclosed that EFCC operatives acting on intelligence traced the fugitives to a hideout behind the Mechanic Village area in Kanshio, Makurdi. Upon arrival, the operatives reportedly encountered armed individuals believed to be associated with the fleeing suspects.

The situation quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire as the suspects allegedly opened fire on the EFCC team. During the confrontation, Sesugh sustained gunshot wounds. He was later discovered by operatives and rushed to a nearby medical facility, where he was confirmed dead.

Authorities said the deceased had been among three suspects arrested on April 28, 2026, for alleged cybercrime activities before escaping from lawful custody days later. The EFCC had subsequently launched efforts to rearrest the fugitives.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation has been ordered to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter. Police authorities added that the deceased's body has been deposited at a mortuary pending an autopsy and further investigations.

Speaking on the development, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale maintained that operatives acted in self-defense after coming under attack while attempting to apprehend the escaped suspects. He noted that law enforcement officers responded to gunfire directed at them during the operation.
