The Federal Government has concluded plans to repatriate more than 1,000 Nigerians currently stranded in South Africa, according to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).
Chairperson of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, disclosed that the exercise is part of ongoing efforts by the government to protect the welfare of Nigerians living abroad and assist those facing difficult circumstances in foreign countries.
According to the commission, many of the affected Nigerians have expressed a desire to return home due to economic challenges, immigration-related issues, unemployment, and other personal difficulties. The repatriation programme is expected to be carried out in phases and will involve close collaboration between Nigerian and South African authorities.
Dabiri-Erewa stated that arrangements are being finalized to ensure the safe and orderly return of the citizens. She noted that the commission has continued to engage with relevant stakeholders, including diplomatic missions, community leaders, and international partners, to facilitate the process.
The NiDCOM boss emphasized that the Federal Government remains committed to the protection and welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora, regardless of their location. She urged Nigerians living abroad to respect the laws of their host countries while seeking assistance through appropriate diplomatic channels whenever necessary.
The planned repatriation comes amid growing concerns over the challenges faced by some Nigerian migrants in South Africa, including issues relating to documentation, employment opportunities, and social integration. Authorities say the initiative is intended to provide relief for those who have voluntarily opted to return home and begin rebuilding their lives in Nigeria.
Government officials also revealed that support mechanisms are being considered to help returnees reintegrate into society through skills acquisition programmes, entrepreneurship support, and other empowerment initiatives.
Observers say the move highlights the government's increasing focus on diaspora affairs and its determination to respond to the needs of Nigerians facing hardship abroad. The successful execution of the repatriation exercise is expected to strengthen confidence in Nigeria's commitment to the welfare of its citizens wherever they may reside.
