The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has condemned the killing of a 15-year-old herder and the slaughter of 13 cattle by suspected gunmen in Plateau State, describing the incident as a tragic attack on innocent civilians and livestock.
According to the association, the attack occurred while the teenage herder was tending cattle in a grazing area within one of the state's rural communities. The assailants reportedly opened fire on the herd, killing the young herder and several cattle before fleeing the scene.
MACBAN officials said the incident has heightened tension among pastoral communities in the area, with many residents expressing fears over their safety and livelihoods. The association noted that the deceased was the sole caretaker of the herd at the time of the attack and was unable to escape the assailants.
Speaking on the development, representatives of the association called on security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted. They also urged the government to strengthen security measures in vulnerable communities to prevent further attacks.
The killing of the teenager and the loss of livestock have been described as a significant economic and emotional blow to the affected family. Cattle breeding remains a major source of income for many pastoral households, and the destruction of livestock often leaves families facing severe financial hardship
The incident comes amid ongoing concerns over communal clashes, cattle rustling, and attacks on farming and grazing communities in parts of Plateau State. Security analysts have repeatedly stressed the need for dialogue, intelligence gathering, and improved law enforcement to address the root causes of violence in affected areas.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to release an official statement on the attack. However, residents and community leaders have called for swift intervention to restore confidence and prevent any escalation of tensions in the area.
The latest incident has renewed calls for stronger protection of lives and property, with stakeholders urging both state and federal authorities to take decisive action against criminal elements operating in rural communities.
