The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against the consumption and distribution of certain energy drinks recently seized by authorities in Ghana over safety concerns.
In a public alert, the agency advised consumers, distributors, retailers, and importers to remain vigilant and avoid products that have been flagged by regulatory authorities. NAFDAC said the warning became necessary following reports that the affected energy drinks were intercepted and confiscated in Ghana after failing to meet required regulatory standards.
According to the agency, the products may pose potential health risks to consumers if they find their way into the Nigerian market. NAFDAC emphasized that only food and beverage products that have undergone proper evaluation and approval should be purchased and consumed.
The agency urged members of the public to carefully check product labels, verify registration details, and report any suspicious or unregistered beverages to the nearest NAFDAC office. It also called on importers and distributors to comply with all regulatory requirements to prevent unsafe products from entering the country's supply chain.
Health experts have long cautioned against the excessive consumption of energy drinks, noting that some products may contain high levels of caffeine, stimulants, or other ingredients that could have adverse effects on health when consumed improperly.
NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health through continuous market surveillance and collaboration with international regulatory bodies. The agency said it would continue to monitor the situation and take necessary enforcement actions against individuals or organizations found distributing prohibited products.
