Navy Discovers 17,000 Litres Of Suspected Stolen Crude In Delta

The Nigerian Navy has recorded another breakthrough in the fight against crude oil theft after uncovering approximately 17,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil in Delta State.

The discovery was made during a routine anti-crude theft operation carried out by naval personnel as part of ongoing efforts to protect Nigeria’s oil infrastructure and curb economic sabotage in the Niger Delta region.

According to military sources, the suspected stolen crude was found at an illegal storage site believed to have been used by oil thieves operating within the area. The operation reportedly followed intelligence gathering and surveillance activities aimed at identifying hotspots for illegal refining and crude oil theft.

Officials disclosed that several containers and storage facilities containing the product were recovered during the raid. The suspects linked to the operation reportedly fled the scene upon sighting security operatives, while investigations have commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to combating crude oil theft, illegal refining, and pipeline vandalism, noting that such activities continue to pose serious threats to the nation's economy, environment, and energy sector.

Oil theft remains one of the major challenges facing Nigeria's petroleum industry. Experts estimate that the country loses billions of naira annually due to illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism, and unauthorized crude oil extraction. These activities have also contributed to environmental degradation in many communities across the Niger Delta.

Β  Residents of the affected area welcomed the operation, expressing hope that sustained security actions would discourage criminal elements and help restore normal economic activities. Community leaders also called for increased surveillance and collaboration between security agencies and local residents.

The latest seizure adds to a growing list of recent interceptions by security forces targeting illegal oil operations in the region. Authorities say continued enforcement efforts have led to the destruction of numerous illegal refining sites and the recovery of large volumes of stolen petroleum products in recent months.

Industry observers believe that intensified military operations, combined with improved community engagement and technological monitoring of pipelines, could significantly reduce the incidence of crude oil theft across the Niger Delta.

As investigations continue, the Navy has assured Nigerians that it will remain vigilant in protecting the nation's oil assets and ensuring that those involved in economic sabotage are brought to justice
