President Bola Tinubu has explained the rationale behind approving reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), saying the changes are aimed at strengthening the scheme and ensuring it better serves the needs of young Nigerians and national development.
According to the President, the reforms are designed to modernize the NYSC by improving its operations, enhancing the welfare and safety of corps members, and equipping participants with practical skills that will increase their employability and entrepreneurial capacity after service.
Tinubu noted that the NYSC has remained a vital institution for promoting national unity and integration since its establishment, but stressed that evolving economic and social realities require the scheme to adapt to current challenges.
The President said the reforms will place greater emphasis on skills acquisition, digital innovation, vocational training, and community development, enabling corps members to contribute more effectively to the country's growth while preparing them for opportunities in the modern economy.
He also reaffirmed his administration's commitment to creating an enabling environment for Nigerian youths through education, job creation, and policies that encourage innovation and self-reliance. According to him, investing in young people remains central to the government's long-term development agenda.
Stakeholders have welcomed the proposed reforms, expressing optimism that a strengthened NYSC programme could improve the experience of corps members while increasing the scheme's impact on national development. They, however, urged the government to ensure effective implementation and adequate funding.
The Federal Government reiterated that the planned reforms are intended to make the NYSC more responsive to the aspirations of Nigerian youths while preserving its core objective of fostering unity, cultural exchange, and nation-building across the country.
