WISTA Africa Seeks Action-Driven Maritime Policies for Sustainable Growth

The Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Africa has called for the implementation of action-driven maritime policies to accelerate sustainable growth across the continent's maritime sector.

Speaking at a recent industry gathering, WISTA Africa emphasized that Africa's maritime industry holds enormous potential for economic transformation but requires practical policy implementation, stronger regional collaboration, and increased investment to unlock its full capacity.

The association noted that while several African countries have introduced policies aimed at developing the blue economy, greater efforts are needed to translate these frameworks into measurable outcomes. It stressed that governments, regulators, and private-sector stakeholders must work together to improve infrastructure, enhance maritime security, and promote innovation.

WISTA Africa also highlighted the importance of empowering women in the maritime industry, advocating for greater gender inclusion in leadership, shipping, logistics, port operations, and other sectors of the maritime value chain. According to the association, creating equal opportunities will strengthen the industry's workforce and contribute to long-term economic development.

The group further called for increased investment in maritime education and professional training to equip young Africans with the skills needed to compete in a rapidly evolving global shipping industry. It noted that technology, digitalization, and environmental sustainability should remain central to future policy decisions.

Industry experts at the event agreed that effective implementation of maritime policies could boost intra-African trade, improve port efficiency, create employment opportunities, and enhance the continent's competitiveness in global shipping.

As African nations continue to pursue blue economy initiatives, WISTA Africa says sustained commitment to practical reforms, inclusive leadership, and strategic investments will be essential to building a resilient and sustainable maritime sector capable of driving economic growth across the continent.
