First Lady: Judiciary Central to Sustaining Rule of Law in Democratic Society

The First Lady has emphasized the critical role of the judiciary in maintaining the rule of law and ensuring the stability of democratic governance, describing it as the backbone of any functioning democratic society.

Speaking during a recent civic engagement event, she noted that no democracy can thrive without a strong, independent, and impartial judiciary. According to her, the courts serve not only as interpreters of the law but also as guardians of justice, fairness, and constitutional order.

She stressed that the judiciary must remain free from political interference, warning that any attempt to undermine its independence could weaken public trust in democratic institutions. β€œA democracy is only as strong as its judiciary,” she was quoted as saying, adding that respect for court decisions is essential for national unity and stability.

The First Lady further highlighted the importance of continuous reforms in the justice system, including improved access to justice for vulnerable groups, faster resolution of cases, and better welfare for judicial officers. She argued that an efficient judiciary helps reduce corruption, protect human rights, and strengthen the rule of law.

Civil society groups and legal practitioners present at the event echoed her sentiments, calling for increased investment in the justice sector and stronger safeguards to protect judicial independence. They also urged citizens to develop greater confidence in the courts and resolve disputes through lawful channels rather than violence or self-help.

Observers say her remarks come at a time when many democracies are grappling with challenges such as political pressure on courts, delayed justice delivery, and rising public skepticism about institutional fairness.

In closing, the First Lady called on all arms of government, as well as citizens, to work together in strengthening democratic values, noting that a respected judiciary remains essential for peace, justice, and national development.
