Obi to FG: Rebuild Existing Roads Before Launching New Projects

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged the Federal Government to prioritize the rehabilitation of existing roads across Nigeria before embarking on new road construction projects.

Obi made the call while expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of many federal highways, saying the poor state of existing infrastructure continues to affect transportation, economic activities, and the safety of millions of Nigerians.

According to him, maintaining and restoring already established road networks would deliver immediate benefits to citizens, reduce travel time, lower vehicle maintenance costs, and improve the movement of goods and services across the country.

He argued that while new infrastructure projects are important, they should not come at the expense of neglected roads that have become dangerous and nearly impassable. Obi stressed that investing in the repair of critical highways would be a more efficient use of public resources and provide greater value for taxpayers.

The former Anambra State governor also emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and proper planning in the execution of infrastructure projects. He called on relevant authorities to ensure that road contracts are completed on schedule and to the required standards.

Obi's remarks have added to the ongoing national conversation about infrastructure development, with many Nigerians advocating increased attention to the maintenance of existing public assets alongside the construction of new projects.

As the government continues to implement its infrastructure agenda, stakeholders say striking a balance between expanding the road network and preserving existing highways will be crucial to improving connectivity, promoting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for citizens.
